Legacy Narrative

Kids come inside,” yelled my Tia Conny with a dire tone. All the younger cousins raced to my grandmas house sliding through the rocky hills, leaving a sand of storm behind the running stampede of kids. Reaching the solid concrete stairs leading to my grandmas front door and walking in to see all the adults waiting on us in the living room. We grabbed a seat, some on the colorful striped carpet that covered the white tile floor, and others in between the adults that were already on the chocolate brown couch that everyone always squeezes on. Waiting to see why it was so important for everyone to be there my grandma enters the room. The chitter chatter came to an end and I knew that it was a serious matter do to the fact that my grandma didn’t walk in with a smile or interacted with us kids right away. “I called this family meeting to get things straight,” my grandma said in an unsmiling tone. “Not everyday of our lives are going to be joyful and easy times. We are all gonna go through hardships and tough obstacles in order to succeed and find ourselves in a better state of place, and when we are going through these hardships, we need to learn how to face them without hurting ourselves or turning away from our family. We need to understand that no matter what we go through we all have to be here to pick one another up. We are family and family always sticks together, I have taught you all better than to just walk away from each other, and be careful because the kids will follow in the footsteps of the adults, and I know you want them to be as close as they all are right now.” As I look around I see the emotional ones in the family shedding tears. When the family meeting finally finished it ended with a humongous group hug and the chitter chatter started up again with effortless smiles on everyones faces.

Family meant everything to my grandma. She could not tolerate when the people she loved got into arguments and was the one who kept the whole family happily together and under control. A few years back, one of my uncles was going through a divorce, many of my family members lost their job, and with my grandma battling anxiety and depression it caused a lot of stress. My family had lots on their mind and to not worry others even more they bottled up most of their feelings to themselves causing everyone to drift apart. Things went from having carne asadas every weekend to barely seeing each other. But of course with my grandma in the family, she put this awkwardness to a stop by calling a family meeting. After the meeting everyone learned that when we were having any sorts of trouble we would be able to rely on one another to find our safe space; and although my grandma couldn't get the adults jobs back, stop a divorce from happening, or stop her sickness, her wise words got us to stick together through not only the fun times, but the rough ones as well.

The legacy my grandma left for our family is knowing that when something goes wrong or when you’re at a really low point in your life, your family will be there to pick you up. Her legacy has shaped our lives in a very positive way making us appreciate our family even more, because although we go through some ups and downs, at the end of the day I know they are all I got. We are now living up to my grandmas legacy of sticking together as a family, helping one another and never leaving one behind no matter what, and will continue to live up to it spreading it for when I have kids and when my kids have kids.

Description: We wrote this narrative essay to portray a time when somebody's legacy imapacted us. Specifically in my narrative I talked about my grandma and it shows how her legacy infleunced me and the legacy that I want to leave behind.
